Following from the massive recent march and rally in Belfast on Saturday, when 20,000 people showed their support for marriage equality, the trade union leadership from across Ireland will formally launch Trade Unions Love Equality at the Congress Biennial Conference in Belfast, with a photo call featuring members of the Congress Executive Council outside the Europa Hotel at 1.10pm on Wednesday July 5th.

Speaking ahead of the launch of Trade Unions Love Equality, ICTU General Secretary Patricia King said:

“Congress was proud to play an active role in the referendum campaign in the Republic of Ireland and we saw how transformational the Yes result was for our society. Congress is part of the Love Equality consortium in NI and as several hundred trade union delegates gather in Belfast, we wish to pledge our continued support to achieve full marriage equality for all of the citizens for Northern Ireland.’

ICTU spokesperson Clare Moore at the Equal Marriage March on 1st July 2017 in Belfast

Congress President Brian Campfield said:

“The campaign for Marriage Equality is in the great tradition of trade union campaigns for full equality and realisation of rights for all.  The overwhelming majority of people in Northern Ireland support equal marriage and are prepared to take to the streets in their thousands to demonstrate this. Now our politicians need to listen to the will of the people and respond by ensuring that marriage equality legislation is introduced as part of any new NI Executive.”
