Northern Ireland is the only region of the UK which does not provide or recognise same-sex marriage, despite huge support among the public and Northern Ireland Assembly members.
In the absence of functioning devolution, only Parliament can undo the ban on same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland. To do this, Conor McGinn MP has introduced a Private Member’s Bill. But it has twice been blocked in the Commons by the objection of a single MP. Without the Government making legislative time available for the Bill, it simply cannot make make progress.
Our campaign – directed towards the Prime Minister, Northern Ireland Secretary of State and the Minister for Women and Equalities – calls on the Government to back this legislation by providing the necessary time for Parliament to vote on extending marriage equality to Northern Ireland.
